MY STORY
I am a multimedia sports journalist based in Portland of Eritrean descent.
Previously, I served as a Trending Sports Reporter for The Oregonian, planning coverage of the sports stories most important to readers on both a local and national level. Engagement and audience building were a big focus for me in that role, as well as reporting on particular stories of interest in the community and expanding The Oregonian's reach and subscriber base through SEO techniques and past coverage on subjects. In 2021, I was the fourth most-read newsroom staff writer, achieving 4.85 million page views. You can browse through all of my stories here.
Nearly the last two years of my life before The Oregonian were spent working in the tech industry as a social media editor for Amazon. I strategized, developed and executed social content for Amazon brand handles, increasing the follower account of the @AmazonNews Twitter account from 80k followers in April 2019, to over 150k in January 2021.
Before that, I served as a digital media producer for the Seattle Seahawks where I wrote stories for the web from general news and injuries, to features and more. I also managed social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram), assisted in video production and occasionally shot and edited photos for photo galleries. In 2017 and 2018, I led the team's written and social content at the NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Before moving to Seattle, I spent time covering the NBA and NFL. From 2012-2016, I served as an NBA beat reporter covering the Milwaukee Bucks for Brewhoop.com (SB Nation) and my college radio station. I covered everything from Giannis Antetokounmpo's early years, to the worst season in franchise history (15 wins was actually enjoyable). I packaged written content such as game recaps, team transactions and analysis. I also handled all of the video content being produced for the website, which included postgame locker room videos, mailbags and game recap packages. On the NFL side for two years, I covered the Green Bay Packers for SB Nation with game recaps, news stories and analysis. During that tenure, I attended the Packers offseason program covering the NFL Draft, OTAs and practices.
A northside Milwaukee native, I first launched my career while attending Brown Deer High School before obtaining my Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. While in college, I completed four journalism internships, in addition to participating in a few panels for Sports Illustrated and working for my campus media outlets. When I am not being consumed by work, I enjoy traveling, trying different restaurants and doing everything humanly possible to not break my mother's jebena.
Oh, and here’s how you pronounce my name correctly.
